Tennis Talk August 2018

The tournament draw is up in the clubhouse.

Please arrange to play your matches on time so we don’t experience a backlog later on. This is especially true of the Mens Singles where the first round must be completed by the 12th August. Many thanks to those of you who have settled up but there is still a considerable amount of tournament fees which have not been paid. It is £3 per person per event. Please post them to the Treasurer at 89 Gores Lane in an envelope with your name and event written down. It makes life so much easier if we all pay on time!

It is with great sadness that we have to inform you that Peter White passed away this month. Peter was a life member who joined in 1982 and his contribution to the club was immense. He was instrumental in many of our procedures, like the Wimbledon ballot, which we still use to this day! His considerable work load included the huge task of rewriting the rule book and he also held office both as Chairman and Trustee of the club. Our thoughts go out to his wife Margaret and all his family at this sad time.

We have good news for those of you who feel flat at the end of the league season! This winter, once the tennis leagues and our club tournament have ended, we plan to run a Club League. This is open to all members regardless of standard. The number and size of teams will depend on the number of participants. The League will run on the same evening each week (yet to be decided) and you will not be committed to having to play every week (unless you want to). The Winter League is still in the planning stage but details will be made available shortly. In the meantime if you are interested in taking part please contact Debbie Johnston by email (debbie.johnston1@btinternet.com) or phone (07763 146034)

We have been tidying up the changing rooms and have unearthed a large number of lost property items. These range from some white socks which are grey to a half-eaten bag of crisps. All the clothing will be given to charity unless they are claimed by the end of August. Please check on the benches at the back of the clubhouse before they disappear forever!

Congratulations to Katherine Bentzen who won the Under 12’s Clwyd Open on Sunday which is a County Tournament. Well done Katherine!

Tennis balls – please can you give Sarah 2 weeks’ notice if you need new balls as we do not have the facility to store them. Thank you.

We are happy to announce that our coach Danny is a father. Harley Thomas McShane was born on 24th July weighing in at 8lb 7 oz. The club send their congratulations to Danny and Lauren on this joyous occasion. This event means that Derek would like to be addressed as Grand Dad from now on.

Have you seen the floral display in the front of the clubhouse? It is truly a wonderful sight and our thanks to Chris Thorpe whose green fingers make our grounds the envy of visiting club and a joy to behold.

2018 Annual Goblin penned by the Supreme Leader of all Goblins, Clive Lewis

The 129th (well the 7th in Goblin Years) annual Men’s Goblin was held in the midst of this glorious world cup summer on Saturday 30 June.
What follows is a redacted, pre-watershed statement, in a format suitable for the club newsletter which I understand carries a 12a rating.

As is always the case, the Goblin was a sell out with sixteen of Formby’s finest dressed in the traditional white. Despite being an “all in white” tournament for the last few years, there was a great deal of anecdotal chat suggesting that many of the competitors had spent the morning independently sourcing a pair of white shorts from Sports Direct. In fact, on hearing that Peter Knowles had done the same thing that morning, Tim Colocott was absolutely incensed that, had he known, the pair of them could have split a “two pairs for £10” instead of the “rip of £7” he had to pay individually.
Alas, crowd favourite Big Lew did not fall for the last-minute rush. Instead he arrived in his own ensemble of cricket pants, a white vest/muscle top and a white sailor’s cap that he “bought from a charity shop in case he ever did a play with sailors in”. Sadly, the technology of our club newsletter does not allow pictures, but it can only be described as the lovechild of Rafael Nadal and Jean-Paul Gaultier circa 2005 look.
I found out later that Big Lew’s new look had triggered flash backs for Phil Boulton. It had triggered memories of an art show gone wrong where he was the VIP guest artist and was greeted by a room full of sailors and a gentleman perched on a motorbike all in rubber in the middle of the room.
It was the usual frenzied round robin tournament with one dodgy line call allowed per match. Although some struggled with this concept more than others……….

Group A winners were Paul Chambers and Grahame Sharp and they faced the group B winners of Phil Gray and Formby’s tallest sailor above. The final was played using wooden racquets on the show court. Phil and Big Lew took a swift 5-0 lead although this was pulled back to 5-4 in the blink of an eye. That was where the comeback ended though and Phil and Lew banged in the match with their dodgy line call on match point.

The tennis finished at 5.30pm but the night was only young, and the majority of the newly tanned goblins ventured forth to the Freshy, Riva and Café Dart returning back to their lives at 1.30am.
Next stop the second annual Yuletide Plate / Goblin Door in December.

Forthcoming events:

  • Club Tournament Up and running!
  • 8/9th September Finals day 2pm
  • Saturday 6th October End of season social
  • Tuesday 13th November A.G.M.

Do you have any old tennis balls? If so, please don’t throw them away! Please leave them in the plastic container at the clubhouse for general use. Thank you!

If you would like anything included in Tennis Talk, please email pncollinson@btinternet.com

Below is the security detail for Gerry, a must whenever he mingles with the general public.
