History

Although the earliest recorded minutes are from 1934, it is thought Formby LTC was founded in the 1880s. A trophy presented to the club by the 4th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment dates back to 1891 and an open lawn tennis tournament is known to have been held between 1920 and 1937 in conjunction with Formby Cricket Club.

For the greater part of 1939-1945 the club was closed and became neglected. After the war it was resurrected by a dynamic president and committee and in 1952 acquired additional land for the construction of three hard courts to compliment the six existing grass courts.

1964 saw the inauguration of The Charlton Trophy, an event for neighbouring clubs, which still takes place today. The trophies themselves had been won by Alderman Charlton in the pre-war open tournament and presented to the club by his wife in his memory.

In the 1990s Formby LTC entered the Silk Cup Challenge Cup and were regional finalists three times. In 1996 they won the national final at The Queens Club.

Since the turn of the century, two of the five grass courts have been replaced with floodlit artificial grass and, in 2009, the refurbishment of the clubhouse interior was completed.

We would very much like to hear from anyone with further information about the club prior to 1934. Please contact Peter Collinson with any details (tel: 01704 830196).
